Well its time to get to the part of the tutorial where you actually start learning about the interface and more! And one other thing. If you don't plan on buying FL Studio. Once you buy FL Studio. You get a lifetime of free updates.
So you wont ever have to buy an updated version of FL Studio again! Most other music producing software don't supply this kind of offer. So it is something to think about! To get started its really simple. Just click on the file button at the top left and click New.
This will give you a completely blank project and will allow you to create what you want from scratch. If you're not interested in starting from scratch, you could always start from an template! The template option is great for those that are new to FL Studio. And its really easy to understand what kind of template you're getting, just from reading the descriptions. I personally don't always recommend using templates. But they can always come in handy for those that are interested. Placing beats & Creating basic soundsIf you're new to these kind of things. At first it can seem a bit complected, even though its actually really simple!
So I'll will explain how to create a simple beat. Before we continue any further. Press the F6 button to open up the View Step Sequencer. Once its open you'll see many buttons and other things that might confuse you.
So lets start with the mute / solo.Firstly what does it do? What would happen if I was to click the solo button? It will mute all the other instruments besides the one you chose to solo.If you can notice that all the other green lights below the the one that we chose to, solo are turned off. That means everything but the kick will be silenced! The only one that wont be silenced is the kick.
To place the beats down like I did, all you have to do is place your mouse over the beat pattern and left click. To undo you can just right click where you last placed your beat.If you don't want to solo the kick. Just repeat what you did before.
Right click the green glow and you will then UN-mute the clap, hat and snare. Now if you want to hear what it sounds like. All you have to do is hit the space-bar. If you want it to stop playing just hit the space-bar again. Knowing the interfaceNow that we have passed the section of starting off with FL studio.
Its now time to look over the entire interface! This might take long, so grab your self something to eat. And something to drink!A lot of people don't understand that FL Studio is just as good as any other music producing program out there. The only thing why people would say others are better.
Are because the VSTs and VSTis that come with it are somewhat better. In fact that is completely incorrect. Learning how to use VSTs and VSTis properly is a daunting task to a lot of people. So as soon as they feel like they're going nowhere with producing on FL studio. Its mainly because they fail to understand the interfaces of these things! The PlaylistThe playlist is a area where you place all your patterns.
What are patterns though? Patterns are kind of like layers. Each layer it could have something different. As you can see in pattern one and two. They both have completely different melody's. Because they act like layers. Once you select a pattern. You will then be able to place that pattern on the playlist.
Like so.What I did there was select my patter and left clicked where I wanted to place it on the playlist. If you don't like the position where it is, then all you have to do is hover your mouse over the layer and move it from left to right or down. Depending on what track you want it on.
Here is a quick picture of the playlist. To open up the playlist all you need to do is press F7.Once you're done with a big project. I might look something like this. You'll have to place your layers in correctly. And add a whole bunch of other stuff that seems complected. But its really not!

I find FL Studio to have a very different approach compared to other DAWs. What I really like is the way that the playlist works and how you can build patterns using it as opposed to the traditional linear, tape-style DAWs where you place your audio and MIDI tracks along the timeline. FL’s automation clips also add on this extra feature, which really allow you to carve out and design unique sounds through the automation modulation. Let’s take a look at how these features can be used to create a dubstep-style wobble bass effect.Step 1 – The 3xOscI have programmed in a standard dubstep style beat and the project is set to 140 BPM. I’m going to be using the instruments and effects that are included with FL Studio so that you can follow along.
Let's use this synth to dial in 3 different waveshapes. On OSC 1, leave it as a Sine wave, and the rest of the parameters can stay the same as well.On OSC 2, change the waveshape to a square wave. Dial the CRS down to -12 semitones.
And increase the Fine to +12 cents to slightly detune this oscillator to Osc 1For OSC 3, use a triangle waveshape. Drop the Vol to 25%, set the CRS to +5, and the Fine to -24 cents so that this oscillator is detuned as well to the others.Right-click on the 3xOsc and choose Piano Roll. The Piano Roll editor window will come up. Now program in a simple bassline. Nothing too busy, just a simple line with some nice sustained notes as this will help when you start wobbling that bass. How about some more distortion?
For some extra bite add the Hardcore guitar effects unit plug-in on Ins3. Select the Distortion stompbox and set the Dist to 60%, the Inferno to 30%, the Comb to 60% and the Glass to 80%.Now that adds some heavy saturation to the sound, but this may be a bit much. On the channelstrip of the bass track next to effect plug-in, you have a mix level where you can choose how much of the effect you want to apply. Set the Hardcore to about 50% and the Fruity Fast Dist to 70%. That’s sounding good now. Step 3 – LFO Automation ClipsTo get that classic wobble bass, an LFO needs to be assigned to the cutoff frequency, and then we will modulate this to generate different wobble effects with the bass.
This can be done quite easily with the 3xOsc synth. On the synth, click on the INS tab, then select the CUT tab (this is the cutoff frequency). Now go down to the LFO settings. Leave it set to a Sine wave.
Drop the ATT down to 0, and turn the AMT all the way up. Click on TB to sync the LFO to the tempo. Right-click on the SPD and choose ‘create automation clip’.
ConclusionFL Studio really has some interesting ways to build up bass sounds and automate them in the playlist window. Get in deep with the 3xOsc synth and create some LFO dubstep wobble bass sounds.

Assign the LFO parameters to automation clips and use the different curves shape to draw in interesting LFO modulations. And make use of the bundled effects to really beef up and saturate your bass sounds.I hope this gives you some ideas of what is possible with FL Studio. Once you’ve worked your way around the 3xOsc synth, try out some of the other synths and modulate their parameters for other results.
FL Studio is at its heart a great MIDI recording and sequencing application. Even though it also records audio, for much of its life it concentrated on MIDI and this is still the thing for which many people love it the most. Partly this is down to the fact that it comes with such an amazing selection of MIDI-triggered instruments, and has a range of tools for programming and inputting data. It helps to be a great player of course but it’s far from essential with FL Studio’s step input mode and arpeggiator amongst many other clever ways to input notes. The great thing about basing a lot of your composition on MIDI tracks is that they are almost endlessy flexible, with none of the limitations of digital audio files. MIDI can be copied, pasted, altered, manipulated and re-routed easily. It’s weightless too, meaning that MIDI data uses virtually no space and no CPU power.
In fact the only thing that uses resources is whatever yous end the MIDI to in order to make sound, typically a software instrument. You can use MIDI tracks to trigger external hardware too of course, and route the audio signal from synths, drum machines and other MIDI hardware back into FL Studio for recording. This lets you incorporate older, more traditional hardware that might be fiddly to program into the much more user-friendly world of FL Studio where putting together complex parts is much easier than it ever was using outboard kit.In terms of getting MIDI in you can use your computer’s keyboard, a regular MIDI keyboard or a more specialised MIDI control surface. FL Studio supports the connection of multiple devices, though to avoid conflicts it can be a good idea to assign each one a unique MIDI channel to work on. In fact there are a number of controller templates in the FL Studio installation directory (Program FilesImage-LineFL StudioSystemHardware specific).
These templates are loaded into the editor that came with your controller and will map it to FL Studio. So hook up your MIDI device and get recording parts right now! Focus On – Speed Up 120:There’s a handy tool in FL Studio for generating MIDI parts called Riff Machine. Choose Tools Riff Machine and a new window opens.
With it, you can create randomized patterns for whatever generator or instrument you currently have selected. There are multiple options including chords, progressions, arpeggios, flips, humanization and interpretation.
Each one has a set of tweakable controls and can be previewed. If you’re happy with the results, accept them, or start over to do something entirely new. This is a great way to create complex and involving MIDI parts from only the most basic of input. It helps you to create music from nowhere, or to take the music you have already made and alter it easily. Step by Step1: With your MIDI interface or device connected, go into FL Studio’s MIDI Settings section and make sure it is visible and selected. If you click on the Controller Type menu you will be able to assign it directly if it’s a device that has a template supplied. Otherwise, just choose Generic Controller from this menu.2: Set the MIDI channel of the device in the Port box by clicking and holding then dragging the mouse up or down. It’s also possible to set dedicated MIDI channels to control things like onmi preview, song marker jump, performance mode and generator mute in this window, if you have additional controllers connected for these purposes.3: In the main window, go to the Transport panel and right click on the Record button to access the recording filter.
Make sure that Score is selected so that notes will be captured. By default, recordings will go into the Piano Roll editor for a track. Here you can change this to send notes to the Step Sequencer if you like.4: The simplest way of inputting MIDI doesn’t actually involve an input device at all, just the mouse. Go to the Step Sequencer and set the length of the pattern using the box at the top left, check the master tempo of the project and edit if necessary.

Then click the buttons in each channel to trigger a note at a specific point.5: That’s fine for beats but for anything melodic you will need to be a little more creative. Try creating a bass instrument for example and it will appear in the Step Sequencer window.
Select it and then click on the Keyboard Editor button at the top right hand corner of the Pattern window. This then allows you to use the mouse to enter multiple chromatic notes easily.6: This editor has a few more tricks up its sleeve, such as tiny portamento switches at the top of each note lane, denoted by triangles. You can also apply swing to the whole pattern using the tiny variable slider at the top of the window, and activate looping for the pattern with the loop button by the length box.
